Pittsburgh International Airport

W.E.C. Engineers, Inc. provided the project management and construction inspection services for repairs to the three level 2100-vehicle short term parking garage at the Pittsburgh International Airport. The bottom level of the garage is occupied by rental car agencies, while the middle and top levels are used for short-term public parking.

Part 1 – Parking Garage Repairs

W.E.C. developed staged construction plans to perform construction activities with minimal disruption to the parking public and rental car agencies. The construction cost for this project was 3.6 million dollars and the garage remained open during construction.

Inspections and material testing were provided for the following repairs:

  • Replacement of caulk joints

  • Installment of additional floor drains

  • Repair of broken shear connections at the joints between recast concrete double-tee

  • Slab-members

  • Repair significant concrete spalls and cracks on pre-cast concrete structural members

  • Replacement of grout pockets at exterior spandrel panel end connection

  • Replacement of the top-level expansion joints

Part 2 – Additional Parking Garage Repairs

For this phase of the work, W.E.C. developed construction sequencing to allow the garage to remain open during construction with minimal disruption. Inspection and material testing were provided for epoxy injection crack repair and the installation of carbon filter reinforced plastic reinforcement sheets to all 2600 double-tee stems in the parking garage. Construction was performed around the clock and completed in four months. The construction cost for the project was 5.2 million dollars
