W.E.C. Engineers, Inc. developed an ArcView Geographic Information System (GIS) application for asbestos management at the Naval Air Engineering Station in Lakehurst, NJ. The project involved the conversion of asbestos survey information, operations & maintenance plan data and general building information into GIS format.

 

Using Avenue and Visual Basic programming, W.E.C. developed a point-and-click program which allows users to select and display building, floor plan and survey point information according to user-specified asbestos criteria. The asbestos survey database is also linked to MSWord files containing the operations & maintenance plan data. Some of the types of asbestos criteria were as follows:

• Type of homogeneous area

• Type of asbestos

• Amount of asbestos

• Facility criticality

• Exposure potential
